The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash have received more media mileage for their name—which, by the way, was legally approved by the Man in Black, who thought it was an ironic homage—than they have for their music. But it’s good that these SoCal cowboys are still underground enough that they can bring their distinctive retro-twangy honky-tonk party music to urbane urban venues such as the Velvet Lounge—whose stage probably hasn’t been graced with Merle Haggard’s “Silver Wings” in a while. Crikey, these boys even do a Dale Watson cover (“Truck Stop in La Grange”), which just goes to show where their pea-picking hearts are. Wear your boots, please, at 8 p.m. at the Velvet Lounge, 915 U St. NW. $7 (suggested donation). (202) 462-7625. (Buzz McClain)
