TUESDAY

When asked what advice he’d give to a new dad, Loudon Wainwright III paused, puzzled, then blurted: “Watch your back!” He then amended it to “Have a good time” before declaring, “I don’t have any advice for anybody about anything.” If 30-odd years of his lyrics are to be believed, he avoided his daughter until she was almost 2. He’s fantasized about breast-feeding alongside his infant son and revealed their later “teenage/middle-aged war.” Both kids, Martha and Rufus Wainwright, relatively unscathed, are now musicians in their own right, and Loudon has garnered new fame as a sitcom dad on Fox’s Undeclared. But for his latest album, Last Man on Earth, the feckless father is prodigal son, with both parents dead, his latest love affair ended, and his family scattered. He’s got his dad’s beard, his mother’s propensity for wine-fed volatility, and a Weltschmerz that, by God, we’re going to hear about. Mordant but never morose, witty but never trivial, he’s out to entertain and trade scars. Watch your back at 7:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $17.50. (703) 549-7500.
