SUNDAY

The And/Ors play music derived from a record-gathering youth. On the band’s debut, Will Self-Destruct, there are elements of early-’90s Sonic Youth (“Flexiclocks”), the scratchy pop of Pavement (“Terror Eyes”), Lemonheads’ laid-back laconics (“Screams Nicole”), and Swervedriver’s bent-note psychedelia (“Timespacechanger”). The San Diego quartet is made up of ex-members of the Interstate Ten, Thee Psychic Hearts, Crash Worship, and Jejune—bands too obscure to merit the “supergroup” tag some have hung on the And/Ors—and the band wears its indie-rock pedigree well enough, though it lacks originality. If vocalist-guitarist Daniel Black and bassist-vocalist Arabella Makalani can manage to boost their melodies, especially when singing together, the band’s hard-driving energy will be enough to separate the And/Ors from their record collection. The band plays with Fish Market at 8:30 p.m. at the Black Cat’s Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $5. (202) 667-7960. (Christopher Porter)
