LTJ Bukem, drum ‘n’ bass impresario and godfather of jungle music, is the rare, accomplished control freak who can manage to keep his mania in check. In 1991, Bukem founded his own label, Good Looking Records, which recently released his second solo full-length, Producer 01. The album’s artwork, which primarily features shots of Bukem’s unaccompanied mug, screams egomaniacal excess. But its subtly crafted tracks suggest that the DJ is happy to beguile with his music rather than astound. The album’s cavalcade of airy melodies and opiate beats transports you to an eternal predawn atmosphere that exists somewhere between the night’s last shot of liquor and the morning’s first cup of coffee. With Bukem spinning, you’ll periodically wonder: Back to the bar or home to bed? He plays with DJ Spooky, Nookie, and MC Conrad at 9 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $25. (202) 393-0930.
