In an effort to drum up interest in its newly refurbished Web site, the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., recently threw down the gauntlet to local history buffs. Each month, the society plans to pose a trivia question about D.C. history on www.hswdc.org. When formulating this month’s question, society quiz-makers were apparently mindful of the masses’ abysmal grasp of history. “What French architect created the basic plan for Washington?” Not exactly a stumper. Will the questions get any more challenging in the future? “Sure, we can make them harder,” says Laura Brower, the society’s marketing director. —Felix Gillette
