Ruppert’s, the Mt. Vernon Square restaurant renowned for its exquisite food and simple selection, will be shutting its doors come May, after an eight-year tenure on 7th Street near New York Avenue NW. “We had such an amazing run,” says chef Kenan Forman. When Forman and his co-owners, Sidra Forman and John Cochran, opened the establishment, they were serving high-end entrees in a neighborhood long neglected by city hall and local developers. With the construction of the new convention center, that mystique has disappeared—along with a portion of its clientele in the post-Sept. 11 economy. “We were no longer going to be this great little out-of-the-way place, but faced with this giant monstrosity across the street,” says Kenan Forman. —Garance Franke-Ruta
