Rock ‘n’ roll has always been about booze: Drink fuels the loud music played by sloppy bands. (It gets fans even sloppier.) And Rye Coalition’s thundering guitars, out-of-control drums, and crazed frontman create an atmosphere perfect for getting ripped. The band’s sound is hardly unique: Take a little (or a lot) of the Jesus Lizard and a helping of Led Zeppelin—that’s pretty much it. But originality isn’t always what’s most important, and often, as long as a band can bring the rock so the people can blow off some steam, it’s doing more than enough. So get yourself a boilermaker, and don’t bother to ask where the money is, when Rye plays with the Early Humans at 9 p.m. at the Black Cat Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $6. (202) 667-7960. (Jacob Long)
