Dupont Circle’s Kramerbooks is famous for its independence: It’s the store that refused to turn over Monica Lewinsky’s book-purchasing records to Kenneth Starr. The nonconformist bookstore also prints T-shirts and stickers that say “NOT an Oprah book,” a Jonathan Franzen-style slight at the media mogul’s book club. There is just one problem: The bookstore is bursting with Oprah books, including four in the prime display area just inside the entrance. How do the shopkeepers explain the discrepancy? “The books were books before they were Oprah books,” says owner David Tenney, referring to Oprah’s “queenlike hand.” Pressed further, he states simply, “We use the slogan ’cause it’s funny.” —Brian Montopoli
