Besides being the subject of the greatest ever Behind the Music episode, Leif Garrett personifies BTM’s raison d’etre, and therefore rock ‘n’ roll’s. He’s the post-Hammer of the Gods epitome of all that is right and wrong with pop, rock, and celebrity, and he hasn’t missed a step in fame’s treacherous odyssey: Blubby-lipped teen idol who always wanted to rock (we never believed that whiny poseur David Cassidy, did we?) loses pouty relevance, turns to drugs and booze, hits Meltdown I, makes feeble clean-up attempt, indulges in disastrous Backslide I, announces Cleanup II on television, reveals that he is indeed in the depths of Backslide II, and re-emerges as the bandanna-topped scruff-rocker he’s always dreamed of being—with less hair. Catch Leif rockin’ on with his current band, F8, tonight. And by “current,” we mean he’s playing with these three guys now; all good wishes to Leif & Co., but we don’t consider a heart-and-sword logo to portend edginess. The show begins with 5 Maseratis at 8:30 p.m. at the Black Cat Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $7. (202) 667-7960. (Arion Berger)
