The Boom, Sea Tiger, and the Sorts all appeared around the same time, in the mid-to-late ’90s, as D.C. punks grew up and began to mine older styles of music for influence. The Boom took on blues and jazz, Sea Tiger attempted New Orleans-style funk and dub, and the Sorts mixed jazz, funk, and dub into a concoction that, unfortunately, resembled Steely Dan more than anyone else. As in most failed experiments, you’d expect everyone involved to pack it in and move on. Except that the Sorts still seem to exist. So if you like your sexy rock on the cleaner and lighter side, be sure to check them out. The band plays with Olive Juice at 9:45 p.m. at the Galaxy Hut, 2711 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. Free.
