There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
At a May 9 press conference, D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton commended Immigration and Naturalization Service agents for busting the bogus-immigration-papers trade “in Adams Morgan, and in particular in the Pigeon Park area near 16th St. and Columbia Road, NW.” “Pigeon Park”? It seems the green-card forgers weren’t the only people dealing in unsanctioned ID. The official moniker of that park, according to Rock Creek Chief Ranger Laura Illige, is Rabaut Park, after Louis Rabaut, the man who inserted the words “under God” into the Pledge of Allegiance. But with no sign announcing the name, the memory of Rabaut loses out to nicknames. The barista in the cafe across the street from the park has one: “They should call it Derelict Park.” —Annys Shin
