I was only moderately impressed by the “Miss Appropriation” article (6/21). The topic was interesting, but it could have been much better covered.
What surprised me, though, is that there was no mention of Shauntay Hinton. She is the reigning Miss USA, only the second woman from D.C. to hold the title since the pageant began, in 1952. Although she is a native of Mississippi, she is a senior at Howard University; she is also a lovely young African-American woman and is promoting the issues of breast and ovarian cancer education, research, and legislation during her year as Miss USA.
I realize that the article focused primarily on the troubles of the local Miss America pageant, but would it have been so awful to add that Hinton has been wonderfully successful as Miss USA?
