Guided by Voices is the Creedence Clearwater Revival of this, rock’s gilded age. Like CCR’s John Fogerty, GbV’s Robert Pollard churns out three-minute pop gems with such startling regularity that it’s easy to take him for granted—yet another compulsively listenable GbV album, puhhhlease. Indeed, the hyperactive Pollard releases so much material—with GbV, under his own name, and with a handful of side projects—that it begins to feel like a full-time job just trying to keep up. If you haven’t yet seen GbV live, you need to: Pollard gets drunk and hams it up, swinging his microphone overhead like Roger Daltrey, delivering great leg kicks, and in general acting like a Dayton, Ohio, ex-elementary school teacher in his mid-’40s who has finally been granted the opportunity to act out all of his deepest, dumbest rock-star fantasies before thousands of people. Which, God bless him, is what he is. Guided by Voices plays with Superdrag at 9 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $17.50. (202) 393-0930. (Michael Little)
