MONDAY

Sightings has made a name for itself over the past few years by being one of the loudest bands on the planet. Using gigantic towers of amps and speakers, the band turns its short, spastic songs into aural torture and its shows into painful endurance tests. Translating this power onto record is something completely different; it’s not easy to capture that kind of assault at home-volume level. Sightings’ long-player sounds as if the band’s pushing its equipment pretty hard, but it also turns a giant live sound into not much more than an annoying tinny buzz. All that aside, it’s hard to deny the band in person, and as long as you remember to wear your industrial-strength ear protection, tonight’s show is bound to be a chest-rattling good time. D.O.V.E. and UEA open starting at 9 p.m. at the Black Cat’s Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $5. (202) 667-7960. (Jacob Long)
