There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Let’s be frank, OK? Delicate AWOL isn’t my idea of a rocking good time—even if the band is responsible for a song called “My Death God Is Zero.” The quartet whose post-rock sound one critic has described (and it was meant as a compliment) as “Yo La Tengo dying” is a mite too “jazzy” and “torchy” for my roughneck sensibilities. That said, if you’re the kind of effete, dickie-wearing jazzbo whose idea of a fabulous night out is listening to soulful music to drink dry martinis by, Delicate AWOL just might be your bowl of cocktail peanuts. Except that the band has also been known to slip into the occasional psychedelic jam, just like a bunch of filthy hippies, and its members have been known to wear the occasional MC5 T-shirt on stage. Make up your minds, fellas. Anyway, if you like that kind of thing, check the band out when it plays with Null Unit at 9:45 p.m. at the Galaxy Hut, 2711 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. Free. (703) 525-8646.
