Felix Gillette’s tongue-in-cheek Washington Monument rant (“Going Down,” 2/21) is quite entertaining. Unfortunately, he glossed over the glass pyramid planned for the Washington Monument grounds. To build this structure in such a high-visibility, tourism-oriented location on America’s National Mall would inevitably draw negative comparisons with I.M. Pei’s stunning glass pyramid above the entrance hall/visitor center at Paris’ Louvre museum. Aside from the aesthetic issues, the glass pyramid, even with air conditioning, creates a hot, uncomfortable waiting area for tourists in Paris. Imagine what would happen during the even warmer summer weather common to Washington, D.C.
