Like the best of Hill’s classic Blue Note works, this new Birdland set contains no unearned skronk: The 12-piece band sounds bright, tight, and right on the money. If Hill had cut this with Rudy Van Gelder some 40 years back, folks would say it’s the finest thing he’d ever done. —Brent Burton
