Excerpts from Boyracer’s 2001 tour diary: May 15, Philly—”Disaster before we’ve even played a note.” May 24th, D.C.—”Arrive on time only to find there’s a play still going on at the venue. We’re told to come back 4 hours later and leave to eat bad pizza.” May 30, New Orleans—”I’d be hard pushed to imagine a gig going more wrong. This town stinks. Truly it smells. There are flying cockroaches.” June 11, Denver—”The swelling has gone down.” June 13, Omaha—”Someone runs outside in their underwear to piss on a neighbour’s car. Everyone is drunk. Jeez, I feel old tonight.” And the band still got back in the fucking van. That’s partially how the members of Boyracer in its many incarnations have made the group an indie-pop institution. It doesn’t hurt that they’re also the frazzled cousins to the Pastels, the punks next door to Belle and Sebastian, the band Blur would like to be—the latest, best version of Village Green-era Kinks. Boyracer plays with Kanda at 9:45 p.m. (see City List for other dates) at the Galaxy Hut, 2711 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. Free. (703) 525-8646. (Jason Cherkis)
