Hella is the stripped-down opposite of fellow Sacramento, Calif., natives !!!. Made up of just two members (Spencer Seim on guitar and Zach Hill on drums), the band writes songs that are the musical equivalent of snapping your fingers and rolling your tongue. For the most part, the tunes are sans vocals, with the conversation left mostly to the duo’s instruments: Seim’s guitar semi-wildly wailing and Hill’s drums replying firm and fast. And though the band’s sound can be crushing, Hella relies less on aggression than on a sort of twins’ intuition about accents and collaboration. See for yourself when the band plays with the Aislers Set and the Quails at 8:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW. $8. (202) 667-7960. (Matthew Schnipper)
