Meta-singer-songwriting (“If you call this sentimental crap/You’ll make me mad”) and decidedly British jazz-rock (MM is almost too polite to solo) somehow complement each other on this 1972 debut, perhaps the best representation of singer-drummer Robert Wyatt’s unusual range. Plus, who can say no to a record that gives you a choice between “Instant Pussy” and “Instant Kitten”? —Brent Burton
