Is there a better porn name than Dick Smothers Jr.? How ’bout George Bush? Long before the oil-baron Bushes made the surname famous, another man (and we do mean man) was busy drilling in a very different way. Beginning in 1908, George Wayne Bush was the model for countless characters in pornographic flipbooks. The former railroad man was at the top of his game, making nearly $15 a week, until he caught the flu of 1918. Because most of the flipbooks were lost and the names of models were rarely publicized, Bush’s contribution to the world of porn would have been completely forgotten if it hadn’t been for the work of “porn aficionado” James Quellen. Working late at the Ohio State University library, Quellen stumbled onto what may prove to be the pornographic find of the century: the Diary of George Wayne Bush. Quellen, who previously had a hand in the OSU-published Janitor’s Guide to Our Campus, knew literary gold when he saw it: He handed the tattered journal over to Random House, and the rest is history. Ask Quellen if he still mops floors when he appears at World of Wonder Books, 12111 Murphy Place, Bethesda. Free. (202) 332-9436 x331. (Mike Kanin)
