MONDAY

In the fall of 2001, Skylab Operations founder Mike Borras moved to Vienna, Austria. He left behind a comfortable pizza-making job and, seemingly, his taste for screamy post-hardcore. (Borras’ previous label, Smoothlips Records, put out 7-inches including releases by such bands as Sleepytime Trio and Staynless.) In addition to plates of vegan schnitzel and walks along the Danube, Borras also took an interest in lo-fi pop and electronica, and after a one-year hiatus, he began releasing music again. Skylab brings a traditional punk aesthetic to the more experimental sounds that have recently been pouring out of American and European laptops, including those produced by the dub-heavy Headphone Science and electro-noise specialists Rose for Bohdan, as well as more guitar-oriented bands such as AM/FM and Duster. Tonight, Borras brings his tunes to Arlington with the Skylab Operations Tour, which features Satellite Grooves and Phasmid (w/Accelera Deck). The blips and beeps begin with SK Pop at 9:45 p.m. at the Galaxy Hut, 2711 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. Free. (703) 525-8646. (Mike Petillo)
