“Read ‘Em and Weep” (4/18) omits any discussion of the current Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library’s nature and historic inception. Has the building retained none of its original meaning as a proper King memorial? How can you raze it without leveling its memorial spirit? Or transplant its groundbreaking spirit to a different building? It went up when a public building named for a black leader was a first at best.
A truly productive look at the building’s status would include a documented look at these historical and, yes, even spiritual questions. Read ’em and weep? The building stands for wiping our tears away.
