“Strippers! Freaks! Perverts! Morons!” No, it’s not Casino Night at Bill Bennett’s house, it’s the barker-style come-on for Cherry Red Productions’ Vaudeville Night. The helpful Cherry Red provocateurs believe that times are again so desperate as to require a return to a style of entertaining that has not been popular for 70 years. As they say on the flier, “Come watch us act like total fucking retards!” Personifying this approach is “Ricardo the Retardo” (aka Richard Renfield), who obviously spent some time studying at the Jerry Lewis Academy of Hey, Lady! But there will also be more “traditional” acts: drag kings, Siamese-twin puppets, a “[b]alloon-swallowing contortionist,” animated films by Rachel Max, and a handful of Cherry Red regulars. Perhaps the vaudest verisimilitude will be provided by Trixie Little, Baltimore’s “Burlesque Superhero.” Though more buff than the Rubenesque beauties of the ’20s, Trixie nonetheless has a let’s-put-on-a-show attitude that today’s young Jolsons should emulate. Get your retard on at 12:30 a.m. at Source Theatre, 1835 14th St. NW. $15. (202) 298-9077. (Dave Nuttycombe)
