One hopes that Erik Wemple and Josh Levin’s remarkable and highly readable story on the last days of Jayson Blair as a New York Times journalist (“Off Target,” 5/9) will eventually evoke higher praise than mine, but I would like to share two thoughts.
First, as a longtime fan of Gregory McDonald’s character Fletch, I found it very strange that Blair’s location was so often in question by Times management. Didn’t he ever submit expense reports?
Second, and much more disturbing, was the quote from a happily anonymous Washington Post reporter: “It is impossible to understate the weird kind of train-wreck glee that is pervading this room, now that everyone smells blood in the water…” There’s a train wreck in the water in the room? Blair evidently isn’t the only journalist in need of heavy editing.
