I would like to respond to the Loose Lips (5/2) item on Mayor Anthony A. Williams’ efforts regarding tort reform. Williams would serve the citizens of the District much more effectively if he were to fight to reform the insurance companies and hospitals that harbor and support the 5 percent of doctors who commit 54 percent of medical malpractice. It is an insult to those who have been injured by these same doctors to propose that the compensation from their negligent acts should be capped so that these negligent doctors can stay in practice and not have their premiums raised.
Why not go to the root of the problem? Real reform would mean preventing negligent doctors from practicing medicine in D.C.
Fewer negligent doctors = fewer victims = fewer malpractice cases = lower premiums.
