Hong Kong movies are best-known for the flamboyant stunt sequences that made stars of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, and lately have been appropriated by Hollywood. Yet HK cinema is also haunted, and not just by action-comedy ghosts and vampires. The Freer’s eighth annual Hong Kong film fest includes such fluff as Love Undercover (at 2 p.m. Friday, July 25, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27), in which a gangster falls for a rookie female cop, but also such moody fare as Wong Kar-wai’s 1991 Days of Being Wild (at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17) and Riley Yip’s Just One Look (at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, and at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15), which take wistful glances at the ’60s. Adding to the sense of loss, Days of Being Wild and the 1993 martial-arts extravaganza The Bride With White Hair (at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21) are presented in tribute to Leslie Cheung, who starred in both and died earlier this year. Two films by the versatile directorial team of Johnny To and Wai Ka-fai present Japan as a possible alternative to melancholy HK: the boisterous comedy Love on a Diet (at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14) is set entirely in Japan, and most of the dialogue in Fulltime Killer (at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, and at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8) is in Japanese. The latter film, a soulful-hitman fantasia that borrows from John Woo, Wong Kai-wai, and Suzuki Seijun, is the most deliriously idiosyncratic of the series’s premieres.
