In 1972, FM was hip, but AM kept spinning its gold: inoffensive singles. It wasn’t all bubble gum, though. From the gory pool-hall fight of “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” to the sailors’ plaything of “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl),” some real grit—as well as some ass-shakin’ grooves—traveled through the lower frequencies. —Anne Marson
