Richard Gere is an acolyte. So is Beastie Boy Adam Yauch. And, hey, what’s not to like about the doctrines of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet? Well, for starters, he teaches that gay sex is a no-no for Buddhists. Ditto oral and anal sex for straight folks. Oh, and he maintains that a good Buddhist should also be “master of his domain.” Geez, who was this guy’s sex-ed instructor, Cotton Mather? But if His Holiness has a Popemobile-sized bug up his butt when it comes to buggery and onanism, he stands with the angels in his commitment to using nonviolence to free Tibet from Chinese occupation. Similarly, his is a powerful voice for tolerance in a world where religion seems to have less to do with loving one’s neighbor for what you have in common than with spilling his blood for what you don’t. His Holiness speaks on the topic of cultivating peace as an antidote to violence at 4 p.m. (doors open at 2:30 p.m.) at the Washington National Cathedral, Massachusetts and Wisconsin Avenues NW. Free. (202) 537-2221. (Michael Little)
