No need to bring up the fact that Quasi stands for the divorced duo of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss. Both arguably have better things to do than play with each other: he noodling for Elliott Smith, she making sure Sleater-Kinney keeps the beat. Although they didn’t invent the bad marriage as creative force (Ike and Tina own that genre) and, well, didn’t get Holly Golightly to sing a song about them (fuck you, White Stripes), we should still give a shit about their new album, Hot Shit. Because even if Quasi peaked with Featuring “Birds”, and Coomes may now be mining Clapton-style slide guitar, its stuff treads that line between invention and ruin and still comes off as incredibly consistent: All swirly organ, rollicking beats, high harmonies, and oddball R&B, it’s amusement-park soundtracks for misanthropes who can’t stomach the rides. When the pair starts going off on tangents with Coomes hunched over his Rocksichord and Weiss playing back those great beats in her head, you won’t care that they once broke up. Quasi plays with Hella and Dame Fate at 8:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW. $10. (202) 667-7960. (Jason Cherkis)
