The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe has developed something of a reputation for being, er, unpredictable. Though he might take the occasional drug or six—one of the loveliest songs off the band’s latest, …And This Is Our Music, is called “You Look Great When I’m Fucked Up”—and he’s been known to lose his shit at shows and screw around on stage ’til everybody’s walked out, he was the picture of decorum when BJM played at South by Southwest. Well, except for the part where he told the music-industry people in the audience—as if anybody else goes to SXSW—to go fuck themselves. But that’s a point in his favor, right? Whether you wanna call it “presence” or “obnoxious rock attitude,” Newcombe’s ornery streak just complements the band’s druggy, evil-as-Altamont sound. Get abused when the band plays with the High Strung at 9 p.m. on the Black Cat’s Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $7. (202) 667-7960. (Michael Little)
