You can’t have a jazz nonet without getting some cheesy sounds—it’s just the way harmonies get stacked. And the drumming here is sometimes rock-pedestrian—or at least funk-informed. But then there’s that spacey, abstract Hill pianism—which basically means that this 1969 date sounds like nothing else around. —Brent Burton
