WEDNESDAY

Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid is the name of the CD. “Wrote a poem on the back of your shoulder” is a lyric in the tellingly named tune “Misfit.” And Elefant is the name of the band behind all this sensitivity and depression. For anyone who came of age in the ’80s, Elefant will sound like a mix of the Smiths and Joy Division. For recent indie-pop converts, Elefant will recall New Wave retreaders the Strokes and Interpol. Diego Garcia, a lad who’s that deadly combination of handsome and sad, heads the New York City quartet, singing like a young David Bowie with a hint of Morrissey deadpan. Yep, Elefant’s got all the makings of the next big thing—of 1983. See my kind of band at 8 p.m. at the Velvet Lounge, 915 U St. NW. $6. (202) 462-7625. (Christopher Porter)
