There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
The cover story on the Washington Humane Society (“Heel Thyself,” 3/26) was quite eye-opening, but one shocking fact stood out to me more than anything else: Each year, 12,000 animals enter the shelter. More than 65 percent of them are euthanized, and most of these animals are healthy.
The high rate of healthy animals killed each year in D.C. is a sad fact, much sadder than any of the political struggles between D.C. city officials and shelter employees. I encourage everyone to help lower this number by spaying and neutering pets and never buying an animal from a pet store or breeder. Always adopt a homeless animal. Thousands of them are waiting for homes.
