There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Christopher Durang snaps the waistband of “Comic Briefs,” the Renegade Theater’s evening of four one-acts. In the playwright’s Wanda’s Visit, the strained marriage of uptight Jim and Marsha is tested by a visit from Jim’s high-school crush. It’s not the same Wanda Jim remembers, though. For one thing, she’s had plastic surgery. “Not the fancy-schmancy kind that makes your face look better,” she explains, “but more so they can’t find me.” The capper of the evening is Durang’s Tennessee Williams sendup, For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls. Fragile, lame, asthmatic, bunny-slippered Lawrence Wingvalley is in for a surprise—a “feminine caller,” arranged by his brother, Tom. Mother Wingvalley’s hopes that biology will take its course come crashing down, however, when he trots out his prized and lovingly named collection of glass cocktail stirrers: String Bean, Thermometer, Pinocchio. Meet them and the rest of the gang when the show starts at 8 p.m. (see City List for other dates) at the Warehouse Theater’s 2nd Stage, 1019 7th St. NW. $15. (301) 871-1487. (Janet Hopf)
