There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Where’s Allan Havey been? A couple of spots on Curb Your Enthusiasm and a bit in Wild Things 2 are far beneath the Florida State theater grad, for he is a cable pioneer. From 1989 to 1992, Havey hosted Night After Night With Allan Havey on the Comedy Channel (now Comedy Central). Instead of girls on trampolines, NAN would request and receive faxes (faxes?!), which Havey would read on the air. And because the studio was so tiny, the show featured a literal “audience of one,” a single lucky soul who witnessed the smartly measured jocularity. Havey’s got something conspicuously missing from the current cesspool of cable comedy—style. Sure, he, too, rants about how screwed up every damn thing is, but at a conversational, low-decibel level that allows the funny to sink in rather than bludgeon. Join the audience of several when Havey performs at 8:30 p.m. (see City List for other dates) at the Improv, 1140 Connecticut Ave. NW. $15. (202) 296-7008. (Dave Nuttycombe)
