There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
JUNE 5 & 6
Lock up Grandma: The Washington Folk Festival (featuring Magpie, pictured) is back to corrupt the whole family. Driven out of our upstanding region after the hammered-dulcimer riots of 2000 (or suspended for park construction, if you believe the propaganda), the Folklore Society of Greater Washington’s two-day bacchanal will now be defiling Glen Echo with such perverse practices as contra dancing (rebels!), “leather decorative accessories” (Village People!), and something called a “Barrelhouse Brawl” (what, exactly, is in those barrels?). A band called Big Blow and the Bushwackers playing didgeridoos? Well, maybe that’s what you libertines in Takoma Park call those long tubes. Even more insidious are the Chromatics, a musical gang straight outta Greenbelt currently indoctrinating defenseless fifth-graders into the sleazy demimonde of a cappella music by appealing to their interest in astronomy. (Sample lyric: “By looking at the spectrum of the light that’s glowing…Its Doppler Shift will tell us if it’s coming or going/Doo doo doo doo doo-ooo.”) And as for the New Southern Cow Tippers, well, let’s just say that this event will have something to offend just about every sensibility. Think you can handle the danger? “Take the wild ride on the folk side,” as the volunteer solicitation brazenly suggests, from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 5, and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo. Free. (301) 320-2330. (Pamela Murray Winters)
