There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
In between ribbon-cutting ceremonies and mayoral press conferences, viewers of Channel 16 usually enjoy staid public-service announcements for city services. But the ad for the District’s Office of Finance and Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Unit, which maintains abandoned assets from banks, insurance companies, and other businesses, is a little more jazzy. Or soulful, at least: The spot, which has run since mid-April, features the O’Jays’ 1973 hit “For the Love of Money.” “They’re trying to choose music and footage that fits with the message,” says Don Fishman, general counsel for the Office of Cable Television and Telecommunications. But the song is a meditation on the horrible things people do for cash— sample lyric: “For the love of money/People will steal from their mother”—making it a curious choice for what is essentially a list of free money to give away. —Mike DeBonis
