All of you US Weekly and InStyle addicts heard the news long ago: Claire Danes dumped Ben Lee. And with the dissolution of their long-term urchin love snapped the last thread tying Lee to anything resembling notoriety. But that’s OK, ’cause it ain’t notoriety that Lee’s after. Of his latest solo attempt, 2003’s mediocre Hey You. Yes You, he says, “I just wanted this record to have soul….In the end, there’s a weird kind of white-soul feeling to it, I think.” Not even the usually credible producer Dan the Automator could funk this brother up. It’s almost too brutal—and fashionable—to pick on Lee during what is no doubt a shitty moment in his life, but maybe a swift kick in his skinny ass is what this former noise addict needs. White soul like Rick Astley or white soul like Clay Aiken? You be the judge. Lee performs with Pony Up at 9 p.m. on the Black Cat’s Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $8. (202) 667-7960. (Anne Marson)
