Recently, William C. Smith & Co., a local developer, circulated a proposal that would bring a new supermarket, housing, and a “sit-down restaurant” to the Camp Simms site at Alabama Avenue SE. The proposal included three illustrations of sit-down restaurants: Denny’s, IHOP, and…McDonald’s. According to Assistant Project Manager J. Matthew Ritz,

McDonald’s was included “for presentation purposes.” Declining to rule on whether the fast-food joint meets the definition of a sit-down restaurant, Ritz says, “They don’t have a waiter or waitress, but it is a family-style eating facility.” But Ward 8 residents hoping to dine under the Golden Arches may be in for some disappointment. Citing Denny’s, T.G.I. Friday’s, and Ruby Tuesday as ideal sit-down restaurants, Ritz admits, “We are trying

to go a step above a McDonald’s-type restaurant.” —Bidisha Banerjee
