Everywhere he goes, Chicago’s Nathan Amundson—aka Rivulets—seems to make friends, from Jarboe of Swans, who lent her haunting voice to a recent Rivs EP, to Minnesota’s slowcore royalty Low, which has released Rivulets’ albums on its Chairkickers’ Union label. Indeed, Rivs takes Low’s minimalism to the extreme, stretching each note until it fades into a ringing echo. Amundson captures those visions that are always just slightly out of reach, asking honest and desperate questions: “Why can’t you ever say what you mean?” (“Waited for You”); “How long’re you going to keep me waiting here?” (“Four Weeks”). He even recorded an entire EP about alcohol—and nothing says lonely isolation better than that. Toss back a few with Rivulets when he plays with the Nein at 9:45 p.m. at Galaxy Hut, 2711 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. Free. (703) 525-8646. (Catherine P. Lewis)
