As a member of the Washington History editorial board, I am very familiar with the idea that the city of Washington has no local history. People often say it. I was stunned, however, to see it put forth (“L’Enfant Terrible,” 12/24/04) in the alternative newspaper of Washington, D.C.

While I am sure that David Plotz’s racism is unconscious in this case, to deny the existence of one of the richest black urban histories in the United States is just that: racism. I urge your readers to look at the new issue of the magazine and decide for themselves if its content is trivial.
