There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
On the night of Jan. 13, two revolutionaries clad in Black Block regalia hurled eggs at former Green Party and independent presidential nominee Ralph Nader as he was making a campaign-debt-retirement stop and book signing at the Electric Maid in Takoma, D.C. In keeping with Nader’s own record, the protesters’ aim was off-center, missing their target and nailing several audience members. According to Nader organizer Jason Kafoury, the ballot buster himself emerged “spotless” from the incident. “It was pretty funny,” he says. Though an organization called Red & Anarchist Action Network claimed responsibility for the attack in an article posted at infoshop.org, the real culprits were “a couple of kids that were from the community,” according to acting Electric Maid volunteer coordinator Clay Harris. Kafoury confirms this account. “They were unhappy about having to pay $5 to get in,” he says. —Mike Kanin
