Corporal Punishment

Dec. 21, 2004, 2:55 p.m.

Security and MPD responded to the 3rd Floor because several students had just broken up a fight between a female student and a male teacher. The student reported to security that she was playing in the hallway and the teacher walked her to his classroom with another student. The student said that the teacher began calling her names. The teacher then pushed her out of his classroom. The student said she pushed the teacher back. She says the teacher pushed her again and then struck her in the face with a closed fist. The student said she struck the teacher in the face before they both fell to the floor. The teacher stated he asked the student to leave his classroom, she ignored him. He says the student then pushed him. The teacher said he asked the student again to leave and the student then struck him in the chest with a closed fist before they both fell to the floor. The student was restrained by security. The teacher was restrained by MPD. The student’s glasses were knocked off but she didn’t sustain any injuries. The teacher sustained a busted lip. Both were arrested. The student’s parent was notified. A Watkins Investigator will be assigned to the case. Administrative action pending.

Improper Conduct

H.D. Cooke Elementary School

Jan. 7, 2005, 8:37 a.m.

A special education coordinator reported to security that a parent entered the main office and began taking pictures of the staff. The parent was yelling and upset. The parent stated that her son was struck in the head by an aftercare worker. MPD was notified, responded and escorted the parent out of the building. MPD disposed of the camera. Administrative action is pending against the parent.

Improper Conduct

Ballou Senior High School

3401 4th St. SE

Jan. 31, 2005, 9:04 a.m.

A special education teacher was in the classroom when she called a student retarded in front of all of the [other] students. The teacher also read that student’s profile, which acknowledged that the student was retarded, to all of the students. School security notified the school-assigned MPD officer. The MPD officer did not complete a report. A Watkins Investigator will be assigned to the case. Administrative action is pending.
