A few weeks ago, Dupont Circle resident Phil Carney took a break from a volunteer job repainting the front entrance of Ross Elementary School to visit “the boys’ room”—and found that it was anything but. Several of the bathroom’s newly installed self-flushing urinals had been placed at an adult height. “I was flabbergasted,” he says. “I’m 5-[foot-]8, and I was barely tall enough. Whoever put them in…wasn’t thinking.” Carney saw fit to alert the authorities. “I mentioned it to the principal, who said that she would pass along the word to [D.C. Public Schools]. Obviously, she had not gone into the boys’ room.” According to schools spokesperson Roxanne Evans, the facilities department will likely lower the urinals. “These things are serious if you’re a child,” she says.—Jeff Horwitz
