Joe Gibbs’ forum-shopping (Cheap Seats, “Wet Blanket Coverage,” 4/8) should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed the Redskins for the past 20-plus years. Back in the early to mid-’80s, Gibbs had a weekly TV show with Sonny Jurgensen on Channel 9, then WDVM, and he usually appeared on the late Glenn Brenner’s sports segment every Monday following a game. The relationship between Channel 9 and Gibbs began to sour in 1985, when Brenner had the nerve to ask Gibbs why he would not consider replacing a struggling Joe Theismann with Jay Schroeder. Gibbs was so incensed over Brenner’s questioning his decisionmaking that he nearly got into an on-air shouting match with Brenner. After Theismann was injured, Schroeder proved Brenner right by leading the Redskins to four victories in their last five games (and nearly missing a playoff berth).
The following season, Gibbs discontinued his show on Channel 9 and appeared on WRC-TV’s Redskins Report with George Michael. Perhaps Gibbs knew at the time that Michael lobs so many softball questions that he makes Larry King look like Mike Wallace.
