The cover story about the death of the cat (“More Than a Feline,” 5/27) included a sidebar about Dr. Jay Merker (“The Doctor Is Out,” 5/27). Several years ago, Merker treated my dearly loved cat, Red. Sadly, Red contracted terminal cancer; mercifully, the course of the disease was swift. Merker provided the most compassionate, caring, and thorough medical care I have ever experienced, from either veterinary or human-patient practitioners. He even made house calls, sparing both me and the cat untold trauma. I truly believe that his care made the end easier both for me and for Red.

I am grateful to Dr. Merker, and I always will be.
