The one thing James Jones got right in the Loose Lips column on Fenty and the schools (7/15) is that school officials are tired of stunts. So are parents, teachers, and students.
Fenty’s plan is a far cry from a stunt, and Jones clearly missed the boat. The Adrian Fenty plan will fix our city schools. For once we have a politician who isn’t saying, “Let’s wait for Congress to give funds” or “Let’s find a corporation that wants to give away money in a private/public partnership.” After 25 years of this pie-in-the-sky thinking, we finally have the possibility that school construction and maintenance may actually be budgeted and funded through a long-term, stable source. In my book, that makes the Fenty bill anything but laughable and Fenty something of a hero.
