Thanks for the article on single members of the LDS church (“The Church of Latter-day Singles,” 7/29). I’m in Australia, where there are not enough church members to have singles wards. Even so, I can relate in some degree to all of the quotes from Janna Taylor. It’s easy to feel resentful when people see your single-at-30 life as inherently pitiable. And when singles focus too much on marriage, no one dates just for fun—which is sad.
It’s hard to know how things will ever change, but one way might be if people read and think about it and realize they are turning a positive outlook on marriage and family into a very negative (and hurtful) social phenomenon. I appreciate the article for putting it out there for discussion.
