Kudos to Jeff Horwitz for uncovering the lies of the Rev. Willie Wilson (“Pulpit Fiction,” 8/12). Wilson completely made up the story about his son’s not being able to find a date to the prom. Gosh, in just one brief quote by the Rev. Wilson, I counted four grammatical rules and two of the Ten Commandments broken.
He also just spit on the graves of Barbara Jordan, Bayard Rustin, Billy Strayhorn, Benjamin Banneker, George Washington Carver, Langston Hughes, Paul Winfield, Alain Locke, Luther Vandross, Justin Fashanu, James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, Alberta Hunter, Josephine Baker, Moms Mabley, Lorraine Hansberry, former Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia Chris Dickerson, Countee Cullen, Ma Rainey, Alvin Ailey, and Oakland A’s player Glenn Burke, the man who invented the high-five.
There is a very sad myth circulating around the black community in D.C. It says that whites brought homosexuality to Africa. Many people have actually accepted this as gospel! In fact, there are many tribes in Africa that honor and even revere their gay tribe members. Where are they? In areas untouched by European influence.
Fact is, it was homophobia that was brought to Africa by whites. Whites did the same to Native Americans, who also accepted their gay tribe members—until the Europeans came along and started doing things like having their dogs eat the gay Indians alive. Every population group everywhere on Earth has always had somewhere around 7 percent of its populace born gay. Always has been that way. Always will be that way. And anyone who takes a quick glance at the above names of some famous black gays and lesbians should be able to see that the gay community can be a great blessing to all.
Please, Mr. Wilson, speak the truth and speak love. Not the lies and hate found in the “Great Lesbian School Takeover” tale.
